PROJECT BRIEF

by: Associate Professor TPr Dr Habsah Hashim

The central area or commonly referred to as the town center is the most predominant part of any town or city.  Traditionally, the town center is considered as a specific location in a town which possesses distinctive characteristics.  Several issues in Central Business District (CBD) in contemporary cities are deterioration and undesirable adaptive reuse, chronic traffic congestion, environmental degradation/pollution, rising land and property values, overcrowding in high-density neighborhoods and the shift of business and services to the outskirts of town.
The goal of this studio project is to carry out a study of the central area in Langkawi’s Kuah town and to propose a comprehensive design proposal for the central area. The objectives are as follows:
  1. To carry out extensive sectoral planning studies and apply various types of surveys related to central area planning.
  2. Analyze and evaluate problems and issues of the central area in Kuah town.
  3. Apply the elements and principles of central area planning, as well as demonstrate creative concept and innovative ideas in preparing a comprehensive central area plan.
